Adjusting to increase in knowledge

Consider a skirt or trousers with an elastic band at the waist. The elastic is so strong and stiff that when worn, it makes the wearer uncomfortable and creates marks on the skin. What would be the best solution?

First, you could ignore and bear it with the hope that with time it will loosen up. Or you could stretch it on a pseudo-waist bigger than the waist of the wearer to loosen it. Which one would you choose? In the first instance, it would take a long time and the wearer will go through days and months of discomfort anytime he/she wear the trousers or the skirt.

The second instance, however, is faster and saves the wearer all the trouble. That depict how our brains work. At the start, the brain has a limited capacity and can take a little information at a time. When we were kids, we struggle to understand simple ideas and situations which an adult will grasp in a micro-second.

Again, haven’t they stretched their brains so that its capacity has increased? Exactly, what we should do with our minds. Stretch it so it can take extra information. In our educational system, we increase and deepen our knowledge on a single topic as you go higher.

For example, our biology teachers in Junior High School taught us that plants require sunlight for photosynthesis. We got to Senior High School to discover that plants undergo different phases of photosynthesis even with no sunlight. Deeper understanding right?

What we do as Students

reading story book to increase in knowledge
Reading story books and books on interesting topics can do this expanding much better.

For a student to understand this, he/she need to increase in the capacity of the brain. The fastest way will be to use bigger knowledge to expand it. Reading story books and books on interesting topics can do this expanding much better. It opens the student’s mind to wider ideas and expands his/her mental horizon. Such a student tends to understand better in class because his/her brain has increased in knowledge and imagination by these books and easily understands the theory taught in class.

Better is how the students recall what is taught and what he/she studies – good retentive memory. It works like a dog being trained to go after a bone.

At first, the dog wouldn’t understand the language. However, with time, effort and dedication on the part of the trainer, the dog will be able to understand. Train your mind to recall things by reading. Don’t use the abstract class notes to train your memory. Use simple story books, upgrade to magazines and newspapers and as you make it a point to recall these each time, your retentive memory grows.

Conclusion

Be an all-rounded person also, by reading books outside academia that will equip you with skills such as public speaking, cooking, management, investments, team play and many more to increase your knowledge.
